Colloidal Silver Keeps Eggs Fresher, Longer Say Researchers

Shelf life extension has now been certified and the company has embarked on bringing the material to market."

Works With Eggs, Too!
What Indian researchers are doing is this:
They’re coating cardboard or stiff paper egg trays with gelatin mixed with silver nanoparticles. Then they store the eggs in the trays. This in turn dramatically reduces bacterial contamination on the surface of the egg shells.
This reduction of bacterial contamination on the egg shell surfaces is important, because these pathogens are always looking for tiny, microscopic cracks in the shell so they can penetrate the shell and contaminate the raw egg inside.
According to researchers from the Veterinary and Animal Sciences University in India, “The reduced microbial surface contamination raises the shelf life of eggs from 10 to 14 days to 25 to 30 days.” In other words, the shelf life of the eggs is essentially doubled simply by putting them into contact with antimicrobial silver while in storage.
The researchers even had a study published in the Bulletin of Materials Science, where they stated that the silver nanoparticle-coated egg trays showed “strong antimicrobial activity against commonly found bacteria on egg shells” including E. coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus and Salmonella.
The Times of India went on to say, "In village chicken farms, they get small numbers (only 5 to 10 eggs a day). With the coated paper trays, the villagers can accumulate the eggs over a longer period of time and sell them without compromising on quality."
In other words, they’re using silver-coated egg cartons to keep the eggs from spoiling before they can get them to market.
It’s my belief that simple innovations like this, if used worldwide, have the potential to save hundreds of millions of dollars a year by preventing food waste caused by rapid spoilage.
But more importantly, such innovations can also help slow down the spread of food-borne pathogens that cause some 250 different food-borne diseases and sicken some 48 million people a year in the U.S. alone, killing thousands of them and costing hundreds of hundreds of millions of dollars a year in medical treatment.
Interestingly, on the CDC website, in the list of foods most likely to be associated with foodborne illness, fresh foods such as meat, poultry, eggs, milk and shellfish top the list while fresh fruits and vegetables come in a distant second.
So this new innovation is extremely important, since eggs are among the top foods causing food-borne illnesses, worldwide.
Do You Really Need
Of course, you don't really need silver impregnated egg cartons to prevent bacterial contamination and keep your eggs fresher, longer.
Instead, you can simply put some 10 ppm colloidal silver into a pump spray bottle, and lightly spray or “mist” your freshly purchased eggs. Then, allow them to air dry before putting them into the refrigerator.
Or just open
the lid on a fresh carton of eggs, and spray or “mist” both the eggs and the
inside of the carton with colloidal silver, lightly, before allowing it to air
dry and placing it into the fridge.
Another important point: Spraying your eggs with a little bit of 10 ppm colloidal silver and allowing it to air dry before refrigerating them will help prevent food-borne pathogens from cross-contaminating other food items in your refrigerator, as well.
After all, cross-contamination of fresh foods is very common in the refrigerator. For example, you might grab a couple of eggs to use for making potato salad, and in the process get Salmonella on your hands which is then spread to everything else you touch in your refrigerator, such as the potatoes, celery, etc.
So spraying your eggs lightly with colloidal silver after you’ve brought them home from the store can help remove at least one potential source of such cross-contamination from your refrigerated foods.
Not Available in the U.S.
Unfortunately, in the United States, the development of consumer products that incorporate antimicrobial silver into their makeup to help stop the spread of pathogens (and help prevent disease that might otherwise result) is being fought by radical environmentalists who want to severely restrict silver usage.
These radical environmentalists claim that the silver being used in consumer products (such as silver-impregnated egg cartons, or milk cartons, or even on computer keyboards) might end up in landfills and harm good bacteria in the environment.
Of course, the environmentalists don’t seem to understand that the silver came from the environment in the first place. And that any silver leached from a consumer goods product back into the environment is only returning the silver to where it came from.
